Separately, the park's northern sector charges for trail access (Los Cóndores, Base Fitz Roy and Río Eléctrico gates), card/online only, no cash. The Laguna Torre trail from the upper neighborhood is still free.
What is the El Chaltén Urban Use Tax?
It's a municipal charge on the day-trip visitor who doesn't stay overnight in town, meant to maintain urban infrastructure given the huge number of tourists who come to hike for the day.
It was set by Ordinance No. 253 (2025 Annual Tax Schedule) of El Chaltén and has been in force since 3 March 2026. Its value is tied to the fuel price (roughly 2 litres of YPF premium petrol), so it updates when fuel prices change.
How much is it and how do you pay?
- ARS 3,018 per person (2026 reference value, indexed to fuel).
- Paid by QR only — cash is not accepted.
- Applies to day-trip visitors who don't stay overnight in El Chaltén.
Who is exempt from the tax?
Travelers who arrive on a regular scheduled bus are exempt. Other exemptions may apply (for example residents or minors); check the payment portal at the time you pay.
Anyone traveling by private transfer for the day falls under the "day-trip" visitor category, so it's worth planning for. The good news: I tell you beforehand and we stop where needed so you sort the QR without wasting time. You don't have to figure out the process yourself.
How to get to El Chaltén from El CalafateDo you have to pay for the trails?
Yes. Since 21 October 2024, the northern sector of Los Glaciares National Park (the El Chaltén trekking area) charges for trail access through three gates. Payment is online/QR by card only, no cash.

Is the park fee the same as the Glacier entrance?
No, and it's the most common confusion. Los Glaciares National Park has two very distinct sectors:
- Glacier sector (south): to see the Perito Moreno Glacier you pay the park entrance fee (ARS 50,000 foreigners / ARS 25,000 Argentinos / ARS 8,000 Santa Cruz residents, per Resolution 132/2026).
- El Chaltén sector (north): that entrance fee doesn't apply here — instead there's the trail fee by QR plus the municipal Urban Use Tax.
