The Urban Use Tax (TUU) is equivalent to 2 litres of YPF premium petrol per person (Ordinance 253/HCDCh/2024), with exemptions set by the Municipality (Santa Cruz residents and children under 14, among others). Separately, the park's northern sector charges for trail access (Los Cóndores, Base Fitz Roy and Río Eléctrico gates), card/online only, no cash. The Laguna Torre trail from the upper neighborhood is still free.
What is the El Chaltén Urban Use Tax?
It's a municipal charge on the day-trip visitor who doesn't stay overnight in town, meant to maintain urban infrastructure given the huge number of tourists who come to hike for the day.
It was created by El Chaltén's Tax Code (Ordinance 252/HCDCh/2024) and its amount is set by Ordinance 253/HCDCh/2024 (Annual Tax Schedule): equivalent to 2 litres of YPF premium petrol per person, so its value in pesos changes with the fuel price. Who is exempt from the tax?
Under El Chaltén's Tax Code (Ordinance 252/HCDCh/2024), the following are exempt: residents of Santa Cruz province, children under 14, people with an Argentine disability certificate (CUD), retirees and pensioners, and Falklands/Malvinas war veterans.
If you go and come back the same day, the Municipality may treat you as a "day-trip" visitor: I confirm before the trip whether the tax applies and we stop where needed so you sort the payment without wasting time. You don't have to figure out the process yourself.
How to get to El Chaltén from El CalafateDo you have to pay for the trails?
Yes. Since 21 October 2024, the northern sector of Los Glaciares National Park (the El Chaltén trekking area) charges for trail access through three gates. Payment is online/QR by card only, no cash.

Is the park fee the same as the Glacier entrance?
No, and it's the most common confusion. Los Glaciares National Park has two very distinct sectors:
- Glacier sector (south): to see the Perito Moreno Glacier you pay the park entrance fee (ARS 50,000 foreigners / ARS 25,000 Argentinos / ARS 8,000 Santa Cruz residents, per Resolution 132/2026).
- El Chaltén sector (north): that entrance fee doesn't apply here — instead there's the trail fee by QR plus the municipal Urban Use Tax.
