El Chaltén sits 220 km north of El Calafate, at the foot of Mount Fitz Roy — the silhouette on every Patagonia postcard. The drive on Ruta 40 is one of the most scenic in Argentina, with the cordillera rising on your left and Lago Viedma stretching to the horizon. Most travelers don't realize the journey is half the experience. Here's how to do it right.
Your 4 options to El Chaltén
Each one fits a different traveler. Here's the honest breakdown.
🚗
⭐ The smart choice
Private Full Day Transfer with Daniel
Door-to-door pickup at your hotel, scenic stops at viewpoints, the driver waits all day while you trek, and brings you back at sunset. For 2+ travelers, the per-person cost matches the bus — but you get a private vehicle and total flexibility.
Full Day: $310.000 per vehicle (up to 4 pax) · One-way: $220.000
🚌
Public bus (Taqsa / Chaltén Travel)
Regular service from El Calafate's bus terminal. Cheap, but you share with 40+ passengers, fixed schedules, no scenic stops, and you need to arrange your own return. Fine if budget is your top priority.
~$20.000-$30.000 per person · 3 hours · fixed schedules
🚐
Group day tour (travel agency)
Shared minibus with a guide. Fixed schedule, limited time on the ground, you return with the group whether you're tired or wanting more. The pace is set by the slowest member.
~U$S 70-100 per person · group schedule
🚙
Self-drive rental car
Fully paved Ruta 40. Fine in summer — but watch for ice in winter and strong crosswinds. Parking in El Chaltén is limited during peak season, and gas stations are sparse.
From ~$50.000/day + fuel · advance booking required
💡The truth about pricing: For 2 people, the private Full Day costs $155.000/person — about the same as the bus + lunch. For 4 people it drops to $77.500/person — cheaper than the bus, with a private vehicle, scenic stops and a driver who waits while you trek. The math always favors private when you're 2+.

Tips from a local driver
🌅Leave very early
For Laguna de los Tres, you need to be on the trail by 8 AM. We pick you up at 5:30-6 AM. Yes, it's early — but you'll see the cordillera light up at sunrise.
🧥Layer everything
Patagonia weather changes by the hour. Waterproof shell, fleece, thermal base layer. Hat, gloves, sunglasses. Bring all of them, even in summer.
🥪Pack your own lunch
Sandwiches, nuts, energy bars and at least 2 liters of water. There are no kiosks on the trails. The town has restaurants for after.
🎫Park entrance: 50% off
If you've already visited Perito Moreno Glacier, show your ticket at the El Chaltén park entrance — you get a 50% discount. Always.
📵No signal on trails
Cell signal disappears once you leave town. Download the trail map offline before you go. Tell someone your plan.
🍺Reward yourself after
El Chaltén has incredible craft breweries (La Cervecería, La Vinería). After 8 hours of trekking, you've earned that pint.
⚠️Don't try to do El Chaltén and the Glacier on the same day. The Glacier is 80 km west, El Chaltén is 220 km north — opposite directions. Each deserves a full day. Locals will warn you because we've seen too many tourists try and regret it.
